What Are The Penalties for Driving Under the Influence?

Every year, hundreds of people are injured, maimed or killed in motor vehicle accidents caused directly or indirectly by impaired drivers in Canada. Under the Canadian Criminal Code, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs is a criminal offense punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment. Once charged and convicted, you will not be spared even if you are a first time offender and have done no harm to humans or properties. The penalty increases for repeat offenders and is greater if bodily harm or death is caused.

In Canada, it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle when your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is in excess of 0.08 (80 mg alcohol in 100 milliliter of blood). For young and novice drivers, the limit is even lower – 0.00 BAC. In some cases, you may be penalized for driving with a BAC is 0.05 and the penalty may include administrative sanctions such as suspension of your driver’s license. This zero tolerance policy is designed to minimize cases of motor vehicle accidents.
