Theft is an offence punishable by fine or imprisonment or both under the Criminal Code of Canada. It is defined as taking something without the knowledge of and permission from the person or entity that it belongs to with the intention of stealing. It differs from burglary, robbery and looting in that it doesn’t involve breaking in, or use or threat of force. There are several types of thefts. Petty theft is taking things of little value, grand theft is taking things of high value and retail theft (also known as shoplifting) is taking something offered for sale by a retailer without permission.
For the purpose of meting out punishment, the Criminal Code of Canada divides theft into two classes of criminal offences according to the value and nature of things stolen.
